The role of artificial intelligence and digital technologies in the environmental transition of seaports’ logistics: the case of Genoa

Sea ports are increasingly configured as strategic infrastructures affected by profound transformations in response to the new needs for socio-environmental sustainability and adaptation to climate change, which unfolds its pernicious effects especially at the local level, generating a series of negative externalities borne by the historic cities that host them.
For this reason, more and more ports are adopting "green" technologies, such as, for example, cold ironing, intermodal logistics solutions, zero-emission fuels, and monitoring systems for various port emissions, in order to mitigate their environmental impact and adapt to the consequences of ongoing climate change.
In this framework, digitalization, the application of Artificial Intelligence and the development of "smart" and robotic technologies have been identified as tools capable of assisting the sustainable transition of ports (Alzahrani, Petri, Rezgui, & Ghoroghi, 2021) and the cities in which they are located (Vitali and Foschi, 2021).
Following the way paved by Tommasetti, Troisi, & Tuccillo (2014), this research analyzes the "sustainable digital" technologies being developed in the PNRR-RAISE project which are aimed at reducing the environmental impacts of the port of Genoa (classifying them by type, purpose, applicability (TRL) and scalability. Among the expected results there are some policy indications on the methods of diffusion and use of these innovations, in particular the ones with applications in the field of sustainable logistics (D’Amico et al., 2021).
