Propulsion Strategies for the 21st Century: The Future of EV Charging in the US

As the US continues the growth of its EV industry, one of the key components is the development of its EV infrastructure, especially EV chargers and charging stations. The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law of 2021 offered a specific program called the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program to support the growth of chargers and charging stations across both the main vehicle arteries in the US and also underserved communities. This program follows the independent progress made by two main EV players: Tesla and Electrify America. Tesla developed its own Supercharger network to support its nascent EV manufacturing in 2012, and Electrify America began building its network in 2018, based on the requirements of the Volkswagen emissions scandal of 2015. Since then, many new players have entered the charging space, some successful and some failures.

Our research is based on our 2025 Propulsion Strategies for the 21st Century survey that focused on the Future of EV Charging. Our expert survey focuses on the 2030-2035 timeframe, generating responses about the future growth of EVs, consumer perspectives of charging, the charging infrastructure itself, and regulations. We will also provide an update on the current state of EV charging, based on the new US administration plans.
