Transnational capital, development models and regionalism in a world in transition: a critical approach from international political economy:
The aim of the research proposal is to generate knowledge in the area of International Relations and in the field of International Political Economy, in particular, on regionalisms and regional integration . My research activity revolves around three lines of work: i) international system and globalization; ii) Mercosur-integration processes; iii) transnational companies and development models. These lines of work make up my research proposal that studies the relationship between the large companies that make up transnational capital and regionalism. I am going, then, to inquire about the way in which this relationship has been able to influence the processes of regional integration in Latin America. The research proposal is based on the results obtained so far in the doctoral research process that I develop in the Doctoral Program in Political Science, Administration and International Relations at the Complutense University of Madrid, Spain. The doctoral research studies the global trend of capital and its articulation with Latin American regionalism, in particular, the role of transnational companies in the automotive sector in the Southern Common Market (Mercosur) between 1985 and 2019. The research seeks, from critical international political economy (EPIc)1, to understand the various mechanisms of influence of developed countries in the integration schemes of peripheral regions, as is the case of Latin America. In this way, I explore a dimension rarely addressed in studies on regional integration, which refers to the leading role of transnational capital in regionalism and in development models.
- Thèmes secondaires
From my doctoral stay at the Complutense Institute of International Studies at the Complutense University of Madrid, and within the framework of my doctoral scholarship from the Carolina Foundation, I have developed a line of joint work with my thesis director, José Antonio Sanahuja, where we address the study of interregionalism and bi-regional agreements, particularly the agreement between the European Union and Mercosur. These negotiations are studied from the perspective of international political economy, taking into account both structure and agency factors, to identify the reasons that explain the long period of disagreement between the parties, and finally the interests and agreements that made the signing of the agreement possible. in 2019. The Mercosur-EU agreement is based on an interregional strategy functional to globalization and regionalism, which could not be imposed before the economic interests of the parties. Paradoxically, the setback and crisis of globalization and regionalism represent the factor, among others, that has led the parties to the final agreement. These obstacles, however, are still present and are conditioning the complex ratification process of this agreement. In this line, I study, in particular, the offensive and defensive interests of both parties, based on the influence of economic groups during the negotiation stages and, from the signing of the agreement in 2019, on the ratification process.
